The Project
We worked with Kier Construction to deliver the Flying High Academy, a brand-new primary school built under the Priority Schools programme. This project was a complete "ground-up" build, requiring a full mechanical, electrical, and plumbing package to turn a new structure into a functioning learning environment.
The Problem
Building a new school from scratch carries a high risk of "Integration Nightmares". With so many moving parts - from commercial kitchens to classroom ventilation - projects often stall when different contractors fail to coordinate their work. For a school, the stakes are binary: if the heating isn't certified or the fire alarms aren't integrated by day one, the school cannot open, and the local community is left stranded. School leaders are often exhausted by "middle-man" companies that hire unknown subcontractors, leading to shoddy work and communication black holes.
Our Solution
We removed the stress of coordinating multiple trades by providing an in-house, turn-key service. By handling the full design and build ourselves, we ensured that the mechanical "heart" of the building and the electrical "brain" worked in perfect sync.
Our team delivered:
-
Climate & Air: Full heating distribution pipework, classroom ventilation systems, and central extract systems.
-
Plumbing & Safety: Hot and cold water distribution, new sanitaryware, above-ground drainage, and a full sprinkler system installation.
-
Power & Data: Small power and lighting, plus data, security, and access control.
-
Specialist School Tech: A complete commercial kitchen installation, fire alarm systems, induction loops, and smartboard setups.
The Result
Completed in October 2015 with a project value of approximately £800,000, the Flying High Academy opened its doors on time and fully compliant. By choosing a partner that avoids the "blame game" between trades, Kier Construction received a building where every system - from the kitchen vents to the classroom smartboards - was ready for action. We provided the "one and done" solution that schools need, ensuring the academy could focus on pupils rather than infrastructure failures.
